During the designing of the characters, Tetsuya Nomura decided on giving symbols to the three characters, where a great part of the story concentrates on. With the publish of the game, three promo arts of these characters have been published with it.

Each symbol on the promo art can be found on the clothings of these characters and they relate or have a meaning behind their personality. Also each symbol has a name, otherwise known as a nick that describes in short words which personality the characters have.

Squall's personality is that of a lonely wolf, but Tetsuya gave Squall a symbol with the lion, because it gives a mere better meaning behind hsi surname and his fierce, loyal nature against other people he starts to trust.

On the promo art, he stands in front of a red background. On the background is a head of the lion ingraved, the same head that should feature Griever, Squall's favourite Guardian Force. This head can be found back as necklace hanging around his neck, but also onto his weapon and ring.

Squall's symbols name means Sleeping Lion Heart, it represants to Squall's personalit of being strong, loyal, yet lonely, because his true personality lies deep within/behind the wall he has made, sleeping...

Rinoa's personality is the opposite of Squall's, she is more intence, sweet and kind, but also honest and yet judgement about many things, but she is also very spoiled and get's what she wants, without actually hurting people in the process of their feelings.

Her promo art comes with a blue background, she also looks to the other side unlike Squall whom looks to the left. The background has ingraved a wing, the same wings that are to be found back on the back of her duster, whom first is symbolized as the logo of the Forest Owls.

The symbol of Rinoa has the name Wing Heart, it represants Rinoa's carefree attitude, and angelic charms whenever she uses it onto a person, this makes her hover above people on special circumstances, mostly awaking the sleeping lion in Squall.
